Do I need a formal diagnosis to access counselling?

No. You do not need a formal autism, ADHD, or AuDHD diagnosis to access counselling through Common Thread.

We welcome clients who identify as neurodivergent, are exploring neurodivergence, or feel that neurodivergent-affirming support may be helpful for them.

Is the counselling only about neurodivergence?

No. While our counsellors work in neurodivergent-affirming ways, therapy can focus on any area of your life or experience.

Clients may seek support for:

  • trauma
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • burnout
  • relationships
  • grief
  • identity
  • self-esteem
  • overwhelm
  • work or study stress
  • family dynamics
  • life transitions

Our approach recognises that neurodivergence can shape how people experience the world, while understanding that therapy is about the whole person — not just a diagnosis or neurotype.

How much does counselling cost?

Sessions are charged at a fixed rate of £45 per session.

Payment arrangements are made directly with your counsellor.

Are sessions time limited?

No. Counselling through Common Thread is non-time-limited.

Some clients may prefer shorter-term work, while others benefit from longer-term relational therapy. You and your counsellor can decide together what feels appropriate and sustainable.

What kind of counsellors do you work with?

We currently work with qualified neurodivergent counsellors only.

All counsellors:

  • are members of a recognised professional body
  • hold professional insurance
  • engage in clinical supervision
  • work within their own ethical framework

Are sessions online or in person?

All sessions currently take place online via secure video platform. We hope to expand to additional ways of working in the future as the service grows.

Can I choose my counsellor?

You are welcome to share any preferences during the referral process, and we will always try to take these into account where possible.

However, matches depend on counsellor availability and capacity.

How does the waiting list work?

Clients complete a short referral form and are added to the waiting list.

When a suitable space becomes available, we will contact you to discuss a potential match with a counsellor.

Waiting times may vary depending on availability.

What if I struggle with forms or communication?

We understand that communication, processing, and admin can feel difficult or overwhelming for many people.

We aim to keep processes as clear and low-pressure as possible, and you are welcome to let us know about any access needs during the referral process.

Is Common Thread a crisis service?

No. Common Thread is not a crisis or emergency support service.

If you are in immediate danger or require urgent mental health support, please contact emergency services, your GP, or an appropriate crisis support service.
